One of the beloved members of our group, Cengizhan Yalçın has passed away on Sep 16. His life couldn't be saved despite all efforts, after he had a heart attack one week before.
He was aware of ecological crisis and threats of global warming as well as social crisis as early as 1996. He was one of the founders of Social Ecology reading and discussion group in Ankara. The first meetings had been held in his office on Bestekar street. The group started reading and discussing Ecology of Freedom by Murray Bookchin, then continued with other books. He became one of the active participants of Social Ecology Group when the groups in Istanbul and Ankara joined together and formed the new group in 2000. At a time when many opposition magazines were banned and owners and editors were prosecuted, he has taken the legal ownership of the Toplumsal Ekoloji (social ecology) magazine in 2001. He hasn't only taken the financial and legal risks, also participated the publishing and distribution process. It would have been very hard to publish 6 issues of Toplumsal Ekoloji without his contributions in many areas. He has always supported new projects enthusiastically with creative suggestions. Unfortunately, he has completed his life without seeing the projects he desired to achieve. He will "rest forever here in our heart". His desire of free and ecological society will last in our struggle. | |
